MISSION
The James Baldwin Society of NCCU seeks to advance Baldwin scholarship among graduate and undergraduate students at NCCU. The organization aims to provide opportunities for discussion of texts that inform current discourse on race, gender, sexuality, and national identity. Our goal is to highlight the importance of Baldwinian philosophies to contemporary rhetorics of justice and equality. His critical perspectives are key to our understanding of black experience and the distance that exists between hyphenated identities and hegemonic idealisms that underscore practices of racial marginalization in America. All students are welcome to attend and join. The JBSNCCU exists to support the development of critical thinkers, student activists, burgeoning literary scholars, creative artists, and students generally interested in James Baldwin, African American literature, Black Queer literature, and all related fields of study.

VALUES
SCHOLARSHIP
The JBSNCCU promotes the proficient development of scholarly insights and contributions to discourse on race, racism, diversity, gender & sexuality, national identity, and African American literature and arts. We believe the training of new student scholars and artists is of the utmost importance to sustained efforts to achieve justice, equality, and presence. Students must be informed and critically competent to leave a lasting intellectual legacy.
INTEGRITY
The JBSNCCU promotes academic and intellectual integrity in all ways. We value the investigation and promotion of political and social perspectives informed by research and historical knowledge, and aimed at disseminating critical information that aligns with the core tenet of Baldwin’s creative and writerly focus—discovery and exposure of truth.
LOVE IN SERVICE
The JBSNCCU, in accordance with Baldwin’s assertion that “love” is the only effective means of establishing social reform, seeks to bridge the gaps that exist between us in our diversity by consistently exploring and discovering new possibilities for the demonstration of love through service.
COLLABORATION STATEMENT
The James Baldwin Society of NCCU welcomes collaborations with students and faculty from other institutions who are interested in related academic work. We are looking for student researchers, lecturers, creative writers and artists who share our passion for Baldwin studies, and scholarship. We are deeply invested in increasing awareness of the relevance of James Baldwin’s work and perspectives to contemporary understandings of race, racism, national identity, and gender & sexuality studies.
